Medvedev is officially out of contention for the 2025 ATP Finals.

Although he showed an impressive acceleration in performance in the second half of the season, Daniil Medvedev could not secure a spot at the ATP Finals this year.

Just four days after winning the ATP 250 Almaty Open 2025, Daniil Medvedev entered the second round of the ATP 500 Vienna Open hoping to maintain his momentum. However, the Russian player unexpectedly lost 6-7, 4-6 to Corentin Moutet — the very opponent he had defeated in last week’s final.

This result ended Medvedev’s last chance to compete for a ticket to Turin. The former ATP Finals champion will miss the prestigious tournament for the first time since 2019, which features the top 8 players of the year.

Daniil Medvedev did not meet the ranking requirements to participate in the year-end tennis showdown.

From the start of the match, Medvedev struggled with his movement. He needed medical assistance after the third game of the second set to have his right ankle bandaged. Despite his efforts to finish the match, he was unable to overcome the steady performance of his French opponent.

Moutet outscored Medvedev by six points, saved 6 out of 8 break points, and capitalized on 4 break opportunities. His aggressive style and agile net play secured an impressive victory after 1 hour and 45 minutes of play.

Although Medvedev won’t be heading to Turin this year, he showed commendable performances towards the end of the season, raising hopes for a strong comeback in 2026.

Daniil Medvedev was the ATP Finals champion in 2020.

Before this year’s US Open, Medvedev performed poorly, winning only one Grand Slam match — against Thai player Kasidit Samrej — and faced early exits in major tournaments. These disappointing results forced the former world No.1 Russian player to make a tough decision: part ways with his longtime coach Gilles Cervara.

Starting from the Asian swing, Medvedev began to play with renewed enthusiasm, consistently reaching the late stages to compete for titles. Eventually, he claimed the championship in Kazakhstan, ending a drought of more than two and a half years without a title on tour.
