Paris Masters: The Spotlight Stage for ATP World No.1 Club Members

From Boris Becker's powerful serve and Stefan Edberg's elegant volleys in the 1980s and 1990s, to the dominant baseline play of current ATP tour stars like Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, the Rolex Paris Masters has long been a shining platform for ATP World No.1 Club members.

Since the tournament's redefinition in 1986, nine different ATP World No.1 Club members have claimed the title at this indoor hard court event, collectively winning 21 Paris Masters trophies.

This year, fellow ATP World No.1 Club members Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are among the top contenders expected to join this elite list.

1.DjokovicLeading the ATP World No.1 Club with a record 428 total weeks atop the PIF ATP rankings, he boasts an impressive seven titles at the Paris Masters, a tournament record. In 2023, he won again in Paris, securing his 40th ATP Masters 1000 title and further extending his record.

2. MedvedevIs one of the ATP World No.1 Club members participating in this year's Paris Masters. The 29-year-old player has recently regained form, having just won the Almaty tournament, marking his first tour title in over two years. Medvedev triumphed at the Paris Masters in 2020, staging a remarkable comeback in the final against Zverev: trailing 5-7, 3-4, he won 9 of the next 10 games, reversing both the match and his season's momentum.

3. Andy MurrayWon the Paris Masters in 2016. That year, Murray ended the season with a 24-match winning streak: he first claimed his only Rolex Paris Masters title, which was also the last of his 14 ATP Masters 1000 trophies. He then defeated Djokovic at the ATP Finals to secure the year-end No.1 ranking, confirming the Paris Masters as a key indicator for the ATP year-end No.1.

4. Roger FedererOne of the greatest legends in tennis history, with 103 tour titles, but the Paris Masters proved a tough challenge for him. He won the Rolex Paris Masters only once, in 2011, finishing that season with a 17-match winning streak. “I tried many times to win in Paris, but for some reason it never happened until then. So this victory was especially meaningful to me,” Federer reflected.

5.Marat SafinWon the Paris Masters three times—in 2000, 2002, and 2004. In 2007, the tournament surface changed from carpet to hard court; all of Safin’s titles came on carpet courts.

Safin also reached the Paris Masters final in 1999 but was defeated by Andre Agassi.

6.AgassiWon the Paris Masters in 1999, achieving the rare “Paris double” by winning both the French Open (Roland Garros) and the Paris indoor tournament in November. His first Paris Masters title was earned in 1994.

7.SamprasCaptured the title twice. In 1997, the Paris Masters was one of his eight tour titles that year; in 1995, the American defeated Becker in the final to claim the trophy.

8.BeckerWas the first player to win the Paris Masters three times (1986, 1989, 1992). He also reached the final in 1990.

9.EdbergWith his aggressive style and excellent net skills, he won the Paris Masters in 1990. That final was a rematch of the epic Wimbledon five-set final from the same year, but far less intense—Becker retired after just six games due to a thigh injury.

All nine of these World No.1 Club members have won the Paris Masters at least once. Alcaraz is the 28th ATP world No.1 and current leader, while Sinner is the 29th. Neither has yet won this tournament.

As the top two seeds at this year’s Paris Masters, will the upcoming event a week from now witness one of them lifting the trophy?
