The competition in Basel was surprisingly intense.
The number one seed Fritz lost to French competitor Humbertwith set scores of 6-3 and 6-4. After playing back-to-back matches, Fritz eventually gave way.

Ninth seed Shapovalov defeated Ruil 7-6(3) and 6-2to reach the quarterfinals. He is expected to take the spot of third seed Rune. Rune’s Achilles tendon injury appears severe, likely ending his season prematurely.
Fourth seed Ruud beat 40-year-old veteran Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6(5),advancing to the quarterfinals; his ranking jumped 2 places instantly to 9th, re-entering the TOP 10.

Fifth seed Alcaraz won two tiebreaks 7-6(2), 7-6(2) against veteran Cilic. Along with Ruud,they continue to vie for a spot in the year-end finals.

Second seed Shelton was defeated by Munar with scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Munar’s ranking rose 4 spots immediately to 38th.
Remaining in the quarterfinals are Opelka, Fokina, and Fonseca. Mensik withdrew in the second round, giving Fonseca a walkover, and Fonseca’s ATP ranking improved by 4 places to a career-high 42.

This lineup is very favorable for Ruud and Alcaraz, who are expected to meet in the final.
