Excluded from the National Team, Spain's No. 2 tennis player expresses frustration

The Spanish tennis squad will participate in the 2025 Davis Cup finals with a roster that is not the most optimal.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina recently voiced his disappointment after not being called up by captain David Ferrer for Spain’s squad at the 2025 Davis Cup finals in Bologna, Italy, this coming November. Ranked 18th globally and Spain’s second-best player after Carlos Alcaraz, he believes his current form and ranking justify his inclusion in the team.

Earlier this week, David Ferrer announced the four players who will represent Spain at the upcoming Davis Cup finals: Carlos Alcaraz, Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez, and Marcel Granollers. This decision immediately sparked controversy as Davidovich Fokina—who had an impressive season—was left out. In 2025, the 26-year-old reached three ATP finals and two semifinals, achieving a career-high ranking of 18th in the world.

"With a world ranking of 18, I believe I deserve to be among the top four players in my country, with all due respect to my fellow competitors who are also outstanding. Right now, I want to focus on the remainder of the season and aim to enter 2026 at my best form.", Davidovich Fokina shared with MARCA.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was not called up to the national team despite being Spain’s current No. 2 player.

Previously, Spain defeated Denmark and Switzerland in the Davis Cup qualifiers in September to secure their spot in the final eight teams. Davidovich Fokina did not participate in that stage due to physical issues. He confirmed that he informed captain Ferrer about his condition and is ready to return once fully recovered.

"I had to withdraw from Toronto and Cincinnati because my body was overloaded. The captain was fully aware and has been in contact with me throughout.", the Russian-born Spanish player added.

With Davidovich Fokina absent, Carlos Alcaraz and Jaume Munar (pictured) will take on the two singles matches for Spain.

Besides Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, veteran Roberto Bautista Agut will also not participate in this year’s Davis Cup finals. Compared to Munar and especially Martinez, both "ADF" and "RBA" have a stronger track record on hard courts.

The 2025 Davis Cup finals will take place from November 18 to November 23. In the quarterfinals on November 20, Spain will face the Czech Republic, a very strong opponent with top players such as Jiri Lehecka, Jakub Mensik, and Tomas Machac.
