On October 21, 2025, the ATP 500 Basel tournament continued with the men's singles first round. Local wildcard Stan Wawrinka defeated Kecmanovic 6-1, 7-6(3), securing his first hard-court main draw victory this season after previously winning twice on clay.
Now 40 years old, three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka, whose ranking is low and who rarely competes on tour, earned two runner-up finishes at Challenger events this year. After a first-round loss as a wildcard in the Shanghai Rolex Masters, he decided to compete at home in Switzerland. Facing the in-form world No. 52 Kecmanovic, Wawrinka dominated the first set 6-1; in the second set, despite falling behind 0-3, he fought back and won the tiebreak 7-6(3).
Brazilian rising star Fonseca faced defending champion Pericard in the first round. After narrowly winning the first set in a tiebreak, he broke early in the second set and maintained his lead to win 7-6(6), 6-3, handing the defending champion a first-round exit. Second seed Shelton battled for 2 hours and 44 minutes, saving two match points in the deciding set tiebreak to narrowly defeat qualifier Mahzak 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(7), earning his first main draw victory since the US Open. Ninth seed Shapovalov also endured a tough match, eventually defeating American Giron 6-7(3), 6-0, 7-6(4) to advance to the next round.
