This news has caused concern among fans as the former world No. 1 had just made a comeback in an invitational event for retired female stars.

Clijsters, aged 42, was injured while competing against Alizé Cornet, trailing 0-6, 1-2. After leaving the court, the Belgian legend posted a video from her hospital bed confirming she had emergency surgery to repair the ruptured Achilles tendon.

"This is not the update I wanted to share," Clijsters wrote on Instagram. "Hello everyone, as you can see, I’m in the hospital. Yesterday I ruptured my Achilles tendon at the Luxembourg event, which is definitely not pleasant, but I’m now on the path to recovery."

Clijsters said she will need to wear a protective boot for the next two weeks: "It’s a very frustrating injury. Honestly, I didn’t expect to suffer such a serious injury after retirement."

"But what’s happened must be accepted. I’m eager to return to the US, see Brian (my husband) and the kids, and start the recovery process. Thanks to everyone who sent encouraging messages. I was very upset yesterday, but I’m feeling better now."

In a later update, the former US Open champion said the surgery was successful: "The operation is done, the tendon has been repaired, and I will keep updating on my progress. I might have to get someone else to handle the stable work for a while, as I won’t be able to do much!" she humorously added.

"Anyway, thanks to everyone. I really hope to recover soon, gain motivation to return to training, and hopefully take part in the legendary Wimbledon tournament next summer."

Clijsters, who has won the US Open three times and the Australian Open once, received a flood of well-wishes from former colleagues. Legend Billie Jean King wrote: "Wishing you a speedy recovery and good health." Jannik Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill, sent a message: "Unbelievable, Kimmie! Stay strong, wishing you a quick recovery, sending a big hug." Meanwhile, former English player Naomi Broady also expressed: "Oh no! Sending Kim a big hug, hoping you get well soon."

Although unable to compete, Clijsters looks forward to a pleasant weekend on Sunday, 12/10, when she can relax and watch either the Wuhan Open final between Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, or the Shanghai Masters final between Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech.
