Alcaraz revealed that he had to modify his technique to defeat Sinner, who frankly admitted that to beat him, one must step out of their comfort zone.

On the court they are opponents, yet off it, they inspire one another as companions. The peak confrontations between Alcaraz and Sinner represent not just a contest of skills but also a testament to the self-evolution of two prodigies.

At the US Open awards ceremony, Alcaraz stated, “We have faced off so frequently that we are extremely familiar with each other.” In this match, he defeated his longtime rival Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, claiming his second US Open title and securing the highest-ever single Grand Slam prize money of $5 million.

This marked the third Grand Slam final meeting this year between the two stars born after 2000, with Alcaraz leading 2-1. Together, these emerging leaders have dominated all four Grand Slam titles for two consecutive years, heralding a new era in men’s tennis.

Alcaraz started the match with unstoppable momentum. He handed defending champion Sinner a harsh 6-2 defeat in the first set, demonstrating powerful serving and baseline attacks. Sinner fought back in the second set with precise shot placement and steady play, winning 6-3 to level the match. However, the following sets were fully controlled by Alcaraz, who won the third set decisively 6-1 and closed out the fourth set 6-4, hitting a total of 42 winners throughout the match.

This victory not only gave Alcaraz his sixth Grand Slam title but also returned him to the world No. 1 ranking, ending Sinner’s 65-week reign at the top of men’s tennis.

After the match, Alcaraz shared the technical adjustments he made to counter Sinner. “Right after the Wimbledon final,” he said. “Of course, I didn’t start training the very next day; I took a week off.” He smiled and added, “Then we began discussing what I needed to improve — this, that, and the other — to beat Sinner next time.”

These targeted training efforts clearly paid off. Sinner admitted after the match, “He has improved. I felt he played cleaner and sharper today. What he did better today than in London was impressive.”

Sinner especially praised Alcaraz’s serving, saying, “Both corners, both types of serves were executed very cleanly.” This comprehensive technical progress allowed Alcaraz to raise his level at crucial moments.

Despite the loss, Sinner showed the reflective mindset of a top athlete. “Today, I was too predictable, whereas he brought a lot of changes,” Sinner analyzed. “Looks like I need to make some changes myself to make my game less foreseeable.”

The Italian star admitted, “I didn’t come to the net on any serve, nor did I play many drop shots. Suddenly, I had to face Carlos, and I had to step out of my comfort zone.”

Sinner said it’s okay to lose some points during this transformation process. “I want to become a better player, and ultimately, that’s my main goal in tennis.” He and his team have committed to working on these improvements.

Though fierce competitors on court, mutual respect runs deep between them. Alcaraz confessed, “I can’t really analyze because we’ve played so many times and know each other so well; as Sinner said, I’ve watched many of his matches.”

“First, I enjoy watching him play — he’s incredible; secondly, I like studying his style and how he reads matches,” Alcaraz added. He wouldn’t call Sinner predictable but understands his style and key weapons well.

This deep understanding and study make their matches full of tactical shifts and psychological battles. Sinner also highly appreciates Alcaraz’s skill: “He manages things better than I do. He raises his level when it counts.”

Tennis legend McEnroe commented on the match, saying, “Alcaraz has shown astonishing technical evolution. He doesn’t rely solely on talent but stays competitive through constant learning and improvement.”

Former world No. 1 Hewitt remarked, “Sinner’s honesty is admirable. Being able to openly admit the need for change and stepping out of one’s comfort zone is truly a champion’s trait.”

Tennis great Evert reflected, “The rivalry between these two young players reminds me of the early battles between Federer and Nadal. They push each other to improve, and this will define the next decade of men’s tennis.”

On social media, tennis fans shared their thoughts on the thrilling final. One fan said, “Every match between Alcaraz and Sinner feels like a masterclass in tactics — absolutely amazing!” Another commented, “Sinner’s candid self-analysis is truly admirable; that’s the mindset of a real champion.” A different fan added, “Alcaraz’s goofy ‘sorry’ was so cute — winning the title yet staying humble really won me over!”

Men’s tennis has finally entered a new era, and the rivalry between these two promises to make the sport even more exciting. Let’s look forward to what’s ahead!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Lu Xiaotian)
