Alcaraz dethrones Sinner, Nadal ties record but still needs a major title to break the drought

Three minutes a day to catch up on global tennis news. Hello tennis fans, today is Monday, September 8, 2025. Welcome to the noon news report brought to you by "Tennis Home."

Early this morning Beijing time, the exciting 2025 US Open came to an end. In the final men’s singles match, the top seed and defending champion Sinner, known as AI, was off his game and lost in four sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to the 2022 champion and second seed Alcaraz, who successfully defended his title. The young Spaniard improved their head-to-head record to 10-5 and claimed his second US Open crown. With this victory, Alcaraz also overtook Sinner in the ATP rankings to reclaim the world No. 1 spot.

This marks Alcaraz’s sixth Grand Slam title in his career. The young star has become the first player under 23 since the US Open switched to hard courts in 1978 to win at least two Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces. At 22 years and 4 months old, Alcaraz surpassed his compatriot Nadal and became the second youngest male player after Borg to win six Grand Slam titles. Furthermore, his six majors equal those of Swedish legend Edberg and German great Becker, placing him among the sport’s elite.

Following his triumph, Alcaraz earned $5 million in prize money. Fans calculated that over his seven matches at this US Open, he spent a total of 14 hours and 38 minutes on court, which averages about $5,700 per minute. This week, Alcaraz will return to the men’s singles world No. 1 ranking for the 37th week of his career, the first time since September 10, 2023.

After winning his second US Open, Alcaraz extended his lead over Sinner in major titles won at 14-9, including a 6-4 advantage in Grand Slams and 8-4 in ATP Masters 1000 events. The only title he has yet to claim is the ATP Finals, where he currently trails Sinner 0-1.

Turning to other news, last night Beijing time, the ATP officially announced that the Spain-Argentina duo Granollers and Zeballos have qualified for this year’s ATP Finals doubles competition. This year, Granollers and Zeballos won two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open, becoming the second team after Krajicek/Grasple to qualify for the ATP Finals this year, marking their sixth consecutive year earning this spot.

Let’s look ahead to this week’s tournaments. Last night Beijing time, the WTA 250 event in São Paulo, Brazil, released its main draw. The local top player Maya leads the field as the top seed. Players such as Sela, Iera, and Tomjanovic will also compete.

Finally, a guessing game: here is a photo showing the back of a player. Without any hints, can you identify who she is?

In the last guessing game, some fans gave the correct answer. That’s right, the owner of the tennis bag in the picture is none other than Serbian tennis king Novak Djokovic.
