Carlos Alcaraz regained his lost position thanks to his valuable 2025 US Open victory.
Carlos Alcaraz officially returns to the top spot in the world rankings after 455 days, as updated today by the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) on September 8th.
Alcaraz achieved this by winning the 2025 US Open – the final Grand Slam of the year – with a 3-1 victory over Jannik Sinner early this morning, overtaking his main rival. Currently, Alcaraz holds 11,540 points, leading Sinner by 760 points in the rankings.
Sinner entered the US Open final under significant pressure: he had to defend his title to maintain his No. 1 world ranking. In contrast, Alcaraz did not have to defend many points due to an early exit last year, allowing him to start confidently and quickly dominate his opponent.
As Sinner had warned, Alcaraz’s improved serve was the key factor behind his outstanding performance at this year’s US Open, having not lost a single set before the final.
Conversely, Sinner continued to serve poorly as he did in the semifinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Facing Alcaraz – one of the best returners currently and the 2024 US Open champion – the Italian repeatedly paid the price for his careless errors.
Sinner only showed brilliance in the second set, but overall, Alcaraz dominated fully and deservedly won his second US Open title.
Jannik Sinner first reached the No. 1 ranking in June last year and since then displayed dominant form, winning major tournaments such as the Cincinnati Open, US Open, Shanghai Masters, ATP Finals, and Australian Open. However, the turning point came when the 2001-born player failed to defend his Cincinnati title against Alcaraz, eventually losing the crown to Carlitos and being dethroned by his main rival.
