'Arsenal possesses a player who is nearly the best in the world'

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes that Arsenal's Jurrien Timber is approaching the level of the world's top right-backs, ranking just behind Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal.

In the latest episode of the Stick To Football podcast, Gary Neville praised Jurrien Timber - the Dutch signing Mikel Arteta brought to Arsenal for £38 million in 2023.

Although initially signed as a center-back, Timber impressed greatly when deployed as a right-back, performing with such energy and consistency that Neville admitted he "is becoming one of the best players in the world in this position."

Neville stated: “Timber is currently the best full-back in the Premier League.” He emphasized that the 24-year-old not only excels defensively but also plays with a modern style, capable of contributing to attacks, maintaining possession, and moving intelligently.

“I think Timber is almost on the same level as Carvajal – who is currently the best in the world. In terms of consistency, reading the game, and controlling the right flank, Timber is the closest to Carvajal at the moment.”

What makes this praise even more remarkable is that Timber is not a natural right-back. At Ajax, he mainly played as a center-back and only appeared 14 times as a right-back before moving to Arsenal. However, under coach Mikel Arteta, the Dutchman adapted quickly and became a perfect fit in the North London club’s flexible defensive system.

Neville believes Timber’s rapid development comes from his game intelligence and confidence on the ball: “He knows when to push forward and when to drop back. Timber brings Arsenal a rare balance between defense and attack. He’s not just a good defender; he’s a smart footballer.”

After eight Premier League matches, Timber has proven his worth as a key player in Arsenal’s lineup. His steady performances help the “Gunners” stay in the title race and convince fans that the £38 million fee was truly a bargain.

Previously, Ben White was the first-choice right-back, but Timber’s arrival has sparked healthy competition. Many experts believe the Dutchman adds depth and versatility to Arsenal’s defense – qualities Mikel Arteta has always sought.

Gary Neville concluded: “Arsenal doesn’t need every player to be the best, but Timber is the exception. He is very close to the highest level worldwide, and I think if he maintains this form, he will become the most complete right-back in the next few years.”
