Thailand officially appoints coach Anthony Hudson, Madam Pang reveals a surprising reason

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has officially appointed Anthony Hudson as the head coach of the national team. The detailed reasons were personally shared by Madam Pang, the Chairwoman.

Due to urgent timing, the Association decided to appoint Mr. Anthony Hudson, FAT’s Technical Development Director, as the interim head coach of the Thailand national team.

Mr. Hudson has previously been head coach of the United States, New Zealand, and Bahrain, and is well familiar with the Thai football system—regarded as the most suitable candidate at this moment.

"In football, firing a coach is normal. But national team football is not a laboratory—we only have 90 minutes per match to prove ourselves, and every result affects the fans’ confidence."

Pang confirmed that all decisions are based on data and expertise, without personal bias, and expressed respect for all coaches who have worked with her.

Pang thanked the fans—the "12th player of the team"—because all feedback, whether positive or critical, comes from their love for Thai football.

The Association is currently strengthening its youth talent development program, featuring many outstanding players such as Nicholas Mickelson, Benjamin Davis, Thanawat Suengchitthawon, and others.

"I commit to continuing to lead Thai football forward, and I ask fans to give me and the Executive Committee more chances," the FAT Chairwoman announced.

She emphasized: "As the first female Chairwoman of the Football Association of Thailand and the first in Asia, I consider this an honor. This path has both roses and thorns, but I accept all praise and criticism with full respect."

Today, Pang wishes to speak about the termination of the contract (within the legal rights of the employer and fully lawful) with Mr. Masatada Ishii, head coach of the Thailand national team.

This decision by the Association was made after a thorough evaluation of performance, based on technical criteria and professional statistics.

Changing head coaches is normal in the football world. The achievements and results of the Thailand national team are the most important factors for the Association’s success, especially the men’s team—the one with the greatest fan interest and expectations.

Throughout 19 years involved with football, Pang has held many roles related to Thailand’s national teams—men’s, women’s, and U23.

Since becoming Chairwoman of the Football Association of Thailand, Pang has devoted love, dedication, and trust to developing Thai football.

A memorable achievement during Pang’s time as head of the men’s national team delegation was winning two consecutive AFF Cup titles (2020 in Singapore and 2022 in Thailand). At that time, Pang was given the authority by former Chair Somyot Poompanmuang to select the coach, and she chose Mano Polking—who knows Thai football well after many years working domestically.

Mano’s winning ratio was 56%. However, his contract was ended because the Association’s goal was to advance the team as far as possible in the World Cup qualifiers—specifically reaching the third round in Asia, a feat only two coaches have achieved: Kiatisuk Senamuang (Zico), with a 50% win rate but impressive results, and Peter Withe, who led Thailand to round 3 in 2002.
