The Saudi Pro League's summer transfer window remains open until September 23, with rumors indicating that Manchester United center-back Harry Maguire is still a target. According to "Insight Offside," Riyadh Victory, where Ronaldo plays, may make an offer this month, forcing the Red Devils to make a decision.
Not only Riyadh Victory, but Jeddah National is also reportedly closely monitoring Maguire’s situation, with both clubs expected to bid around €15 million (£12.5 million). The English defender’s contract expires at the end of this season, and Manchester United activated a one-year extension option this year.
Manchester United must weigh Maguire’s future with three options: keep him and offer a new contract, which would require the 32-year-old center-back to accept a pay cut from his £190,000 weekly wage; retain him without renewing, allowing him to leave on a free transfer next year and possibly sign with a foreign club as early as January; or accept the Saudi offer and sell him now, as he currently serves as a rotation option under Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United currently have defenders like Lisandro Martínez, De Ligt, Eden Haiven, and Lisandro Martínez, while Luke Shaw has also been playing as a center-back this season. Maguire will turn 33 this year, the team missed out on European competition, and an early exit in the second round of the League Cup has drastically reduced match opportunities, limiting rotation chances. In the first three Premier League matches, Maguire has only played 13 minutes.
However, because Lima is still recovering from injury, and even upon return his fitness remains uncertain due to ongoing issues over the past two years, the 27-year-old Argentine defender is rehabilitating from a previous ACL injury sustained last season and underwent surgery in February. Since the season started, the Argentine international has been intensifying his recovery and has resumed training. His return to the matchday squad is not far off but no timetable has been set yet.
Due to Lima’s condition, Amorim still prefers to keep Maguire and has declined several approaches from other clubs during the summer window. Amorim also values Maguire’s role in the Manchester United dressing room, including him among the six leaders of the team.
Reports say €15 million is a reasonable price for Manchester United, although the likelihood of selling Maguire remains low. Similar to Bruno Fernandes and others, the club will not force Maguire out unless he chooses to leave and requests a transfer, which would then be accepted.
Recently, Maguire clearly stated he will definitely stay at Manchester United "this year," implying that the earliest he would consider a move is January next year, as he believes leaving now would be "a foolish decision."
Spanish media report that Manchester United might sign a new center-back next year, with Dani Vivian from Athletic Bilbao considered a scouting target. The 26-year-old Spanish international, a product of Bilbao’s youth academy, has made 152 appearances and scored 7 goals for the club.
This defender’s contract with Bilbao runs until June 2032, but reportedly has a release clause of only €40 million (£35 million). Given Vivian’s performance level, this is seen as a bargain signing. According to "Fichajes Transfer Network," Vivian might leave Bilbao in January, but a summer transfer next year is more likely, since mid-season moves are difficult even when a release clause exists.
