Onana Agrees to Transfer! Manchester United Reaches Free Loan Deal with Trabzonspor, No Purchase Option Included

David Ornstein, the reputable transfer insider from "The Athletic," reveals that Manchester United's goalkeeper André Onana is ready to move to Trabzonspor in Turkey on loan. The Turkish side wants to finalize the signing of the 29-year-old Cameroonian before the transfer window closes on September 12. It is reported that Trabzonspor hopes Onana will be in the starting lineup for their upcoming league game against Fenerbahçe on September 14.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated: "Trabzonspor and Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement for Onana’s signing. Negotiations between the clubs are complete, and now it depends entirely on Onana’s final decision. Everything hinges on this goalkeeper."

Ornstein mentioned that Onana’s loan to the Turkish league comes with no fee and no permanent transfer clause. Currently, Onana is with the Cameroon national team, while his agent is reviewing the contract details with Trabzonspor. At the club level, Manchester United has fully agreed on the loan terms with Trabzonspor. Onana has also basically agreed to the loan, as manager Rúben Amorim has informed him there is no chance for him to stay in the squad.

In the first three Premier League matches this season, Onana was consistently left out in favor of 27-year-old Turkish international Altay Bayındır. Onana’s only appearance was in the second round of the League Cup, where he conceded twice as Manchester United lost to League Two side Grimsby Town. With Sena Lammers joining United from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, Onana faces even tougher competition. British media expect the 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper to become United’s new first-choice this season.

Since joining Manchester United for €50 million, Onana’s performances have rarely inspired confidence, causing doubts about replacing four-time club player of the year David de Gea with him. "The Athletic" reports that Onana lost his spot not only due to frequent mistakes on the pitch but also because he demanded a pay raise last season, which led Amorim to lose trust in him entirely.

The report reveals that after Manchester United failed to qualify for the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, Onana’s salary was cut by 25%, causing his dissatisfaction. Therefore, when he returned for pre-season training this summer, he requested a new contract to increase his earnings.

Following this, Amorim dropped Onana from the starting lineup and preferred Bayındır, despite the latter’s inconsistent performances. In the first three Premier League games, Bayındır conceded four goals, two of which were attributed to his errors.

The Daily Mail states that Onana will join Trabzonspor after the international break. He was initially linked with Turkish champions Galatasaray, but since Onana was unwilling to transfer at that time, Galatasaray instead signed Ugurcan Çakir for €36 million. The 29-year-old goalkeeper is Turkey’s first choice and started recently against Georgia. Çakir previously played for Trabzonspor, so the club had to find a replacement goalkeeper.

Insiders at Trabzonspor believe Onana could strengthen their squad. Manchester United, having four first-team goalkeepers, is open to loan offers for either Onana or Bayındır. Although insiders say keeping all four is possible, this contradicts Amorim’s plan to build a smaller squad after missing out on European competitions.

Since the season began, Onana felt physically fit to participate in the opening league match but was excluded from the squad against Arsenal, not even making the bench. The number two goalkeeper for that match was Tom Heaton. Onana was even more surprised to be left out of the squad for the game against Fulham.

After missing that match, Onana’s agent asked the club if they should consider other options, but was told it wasn’t necessary, as management said Onana was still part of the coach’s plans. However, this changed quickly. After two mistakes in the League Cup and saving only one of 13 penalties faced, Amorim preferred to use Bayındır.

This marks the second time Manchester United altered their goalkeeper plans this summer. Initially, the club did not intend to sign a new goalkeeper during the transfer window. However, when Onana returned for pre-season training, he reported a hamstring issue on the first day and confirmed an injury the following day, raising doubts about his fitness throughout the summer due to this early setback.

At that time, Manchester United did not actively try to offload Onana. Monaco was the only club showing genuine interest but was told the transfer fee would be at least £30 million, leading them to immediately withdraw from negotiations. Now, the situation has changed for both Manchester United and Onana.

Although Lammers still needs time to adapt to the Premier League and compete for the starting goalkeeper spot, Onana publicly insists he can reclaim his first-choice position. However, after further talks between Manchester United and Onana’s agent, the player clearly understands he may have to leave to find more playing opportunities. Trabzonspor has made an offer, and Onana is seriously considering it.
