This is a startling event in the NBA, revealed just under a year following the lifetime suspension of Jontay Porter.
On the evening of October 23rd, Vietnam time, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups were among more than 30 individuals arrested in connection with two separate indictments involving illegal sports betting and poker schemes—an event shaking the NBA.
Rozier is accused of participating in a sports betting ring using undisclosed insider information about NBA players’ injuries and absences. From late 2022 to March 2024, Rozier’s group, including former player Damon Jones, allegedly exploited this information to place bets and earn hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A notable game involved the matchup between the Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers on March 23, 2023, when Rozier reportedly tipped off associates about leaving the game early due to injury, enabling them to win large bets. The FBI confirmed that the group also laundered money through wire transfers and cryptocurrency to hide their profits.
Although the NBA previously investigated and cleared Rozier during the summer, federal authorities now assert they have sufficient evidence to prosecute.
Meanwhile, Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Trail Blazers, faces charges in a nationwide illegal poker cheating scheme. Prosecutors state Billups and others used advanced cheating technology such as camera-equipped dealing machines, card-reading glasses, and electronic signaling systems to steal information, defrauding victims of over $7.1 million in underground poker games across Las Vegas, Miami, and New York.
The NBA legend was immediately suspended, with assistant coach Tiago Splitter temporarily taking over the team. Previously, Billups was a Detroit Pistons legend, winning the 2004 NBA championship and being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024.
Both Rozier and Billups are scheduled to appear in federal court in Brooklyn soon, marking one of the most serious scandals the NBA has faced, alongside the lifetime ban of Jontay Porter—brother of star Michael Porter Jr.—in 2024.
