Nowitzki: Flagler’s versatility is extremely rare; Mavericks remain competitive in the West if healthy

On September 14th Beijing time, former NBA legend Nowitzki hosted a charity tennis match, with the Mavericks’ rookie Flagler showing support. It’s worth mentioning this was their initial encounter. Nowitzki embraced Flagler cheerfully, and they engaged in a friendly chat. In the interview session, Nowitzki shared his thoughts on Flagler and the Mavericks’ new season.

“The attention he’s receiving is well deserved,” said 47-year-old Nowitzki. “Generally, I don’t follow college sports closely, whether basketball or other elite competitions, but I have definitely followed Flagler. Honestly, his potential is limitless. At just 18, he already controls the pace of the game. He’s athletically gifted, technically skilled, and I’ve heard his work ethic is top-notch.”

“So, based on everything I’ve seen and heard, he’s far from overrated. The Mavericks clearly have high hopes for his development over the next few years. A player this young who can score in multiple ways and defend several positions — such versatility is very rare. I’m excited to see how he adapts to the NBA pace in his rookie season.”

When discussing the Mavericks’ upcoming season, Nowitzki also shared his perspective.

“I think the Mavericks have a very strong roster, but for me, everything depends on health,” Nowitzki said. “When will Irving return? Will he be at 100% when he does? Can Davis stay healthy? LeVert has missed quite a few games before.”

“But if they stay healthy, I believe they will be a very deep team,” he added. “There are at least two reliable players for every position, and with Flagler’s versatility on the wing, the team can run multiple tactical styles. I think they can field many different lineups, and their frontcourt is truly powerful.”

“With their height and athleticism advantage, they should be strong defensively. For me, health remains the key issue. If they stay healthy, they will be very competitive in the West. You have to remember, the Western Conference is always tough. If everyone stays fit, next season will definitely be very successful for them.”

The Mavericks’ trajectory changed dramatically in February this year when they traded their star Doncic to the Lakers, sparking widespread discussion.
