Luka Dončić’s form boosts Lakers’ confidence in roster moves! George: He could become the greatest international player ever

On September 12th Beijing time, The Athletic’s Lakers reporter Dan Woike revealed that the Lakers are constructing their squad around Dončić both currently and going forward, and his excellent showing at the EuroBasket has further solidified the team’s determination to equip him with quality teammates to contend for the title.

Woike wrote: “According to sources within the team and the league, with this new chapter starting alongside Dončić, the Lakers have shifted their stance on roster upgrades this season. Earlier this summer, the Lakers avoided trades involving players with contracts extending beyond the 2025-26 season, but Dončić’s multi-year extension commitment has prompted the Lakers to adopt a more proactive approach in pursuing new players.”

“One key focus area for the team is strengthening the wing position, which requires players capable on both offense and defense. Miami Heat’s Andrew Wiggins fits this profile—previously, the Lakers showed little interest in him, but now, provided the price is right, he has become a more appealing target.”

With Dončić confirmed to stay long-term and showcasing excellent form in a new physique, the Lakers seem optimistic about the team’s potential and eager to see how far they can go. At this year’s EuroBasket, Dončić averaged 34.7 points per game, leading the tournament in scoring so far. Additionally, in the voting for EuroBasket’s best defensive player, Dončić received 24% of fan votes, currently ranking first.

Insider Stein also reported similarly, stating that Wiggins is indeed the Lakers’ current target. Stein noted: “Before Dončić’s long-term future was secured, I didn’t see Wiggins as a likely acquisition for the Lakers, but now the situation has changed. Therefore, my assessment is that if the Heat prioritize salary flexibility and look to reduce payroll in the coming weeks or months, the Lakers would express interest in Wiggins.”

Last season, Wiggins was traded to the Heat in a deal involving Butler. During the Heat’s crucial playoff push, Wiggins played a significant role. According to U.S. media outlet ClutchPoints, as a solid defender with shooting ability, Wiggins would be an ideal partner alongside Dončić.

76ers star Paul George highly praised Dončić. On a podcast, he said: “What we’re talking about now is that he has the potential to become the greatest international player, meaning he would surpass those ‘historical legends.’ He has to outshine Dirk (Nowitzki), Tony Parker, Hakeem (Olajuwon), and even has a chance to, in some ways, surpass Giannis (Antetokounmpo). He absolutely has the potential to rank among the greatest players in NBA history. His style of play is far more mature than his actual age, and he’s incredibly tough — definitely a ‘troublemaker’ for other teams in the league. I really admire Luka.”
