On September 12th, Beijing time, the NCAA revealed on Thursday that enforcement officials are bringing charges against 13 former men's college basketball players for breaching sports wagering regulations and/or failing to cooperate. These athletes represented six separate institutions when the violations occurred. Although the specifics and alleged actions vary by case, they include players betting on their own teams and against them, sharing information with third parties for betting purposes, deliberately manipulating scores or game outcomes, and/or refusing to assist investigators.
According to the NCAA, the six schools involved are Eastern Michigan University, Temple University, Arizona State University, University of New Orleans, North Carolina A&T State University, and Mississippi Valley State University. The NCAA has declined to release the names of these athletes until the disciplinary process concludes. It also stated that none of these players are currently enrolled at the schools where the violations took place. Some third parties are linked to multiple cases; they are aware of how certain players were influenced in these schemes but have withheld specific details.
NCAA President Charlie Baker said in a statement, “The rise of sports betting has created more opportunities for athletes across various sports to engage in unacceptable conduct. Although legalization of sports betting is now a reality, regulators and sportsbooks can do more to mitigate these integrity risks, such as eliminating proposition bets and giving sports leagues a seat at the policymaking table.”
The NCAA stated in its announcement that the schools and associated staff involved in the ongoing investigations are not accused of wrongdoing, and enforcement officials will not seek penalties against these institutions.
Previously, the NCAA announced lifetime bans for three men’s basketball players from Fresno State University and San Jose State University: Mykal Robinson, Steven Vasquez, and Jalen Weaver. All three were dismissed from their teams and no longer attend their original schools due to involvement in “sports betting-related game manipulation.”
The NBA has also been cracking down on betting issues recently; Raptors player Jontay Porter was banned for life, and Malik Beasley is currently under investigation for similar allegations.
