As of September 5th Beijing time, NBA reporter Stein revealed that agent Bernie Lee has notified the players' union that he is no longer Ben Simmons' agent. The 29-year-old is evaluating his future options, including retirement.
Up to now, Ben Simmons has not signed with any team and might choose to retire before training camp opens instead of signing with a club. A source told the New York Post’s Bondy that Simmons is uncertain whether he “still wants to continue” playing in the NBA.
The Knicks are among the teams that have shown interest in the former top draft pick, but they can only offer a veteran minimum contract worth just over $3 million. This salary might not be enough to attract Simmons—despite being only 29, he has struggled with injuries in recent years. Bondy noted that Simmons’ career earnings have surpassed $200 million, and after multiple back surgeries, he may be reluctant to put further strain on his body.
Another source told Bondy that besides Simmons, the Knicks are considering Shamet and at least one other free agent to fill a roster spot. Bondy added that Knicks management has also contacted Malik Beasley’s agent, but Beasley’s signing status remains uncertain due to his involvement in a federal gambling investigation. If teams are confident Beasley can play normally, he might secure a more lucrative contract.
Last season, Simmons played for both the Nets and Clippers, averaging 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists over 51 games. This was his highest number of games played since the 2020-21 season, the last time he was selected as an All-Star.
Besides salary constraints, the Knicks may not be able to guarantee Simmons consistent playing time. During this offseason, the team signed Guerschon Yabusele and Jordan Clarkson through free agency, and having reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season, their core lineup is already established.
Bondy also reported that another team remains interested in signing Simmons but did not specify which one. Earlier reports suggested the Kings and Warriors as potential destinations, both of which currently have open roster spots.
Will we still see the former top pick on the NBA court next season?
