Justin Verlander's career strikeout total surpasses Perry, rising to eighth all-time, but he misses out on a win today.

Justin Verlander, the renowned pitcher for the MLB's San Francisco Giants, faced the St. Louis Cardinals on the road today. Although the Giants narrowly lost 3-2, Verlander recorded his 3,535th career strikeout, surpassing Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry and moving up to eighth place on the MLB all-time strikeout list.

Verlander's historic strikeout came in the sixth inning against Nolan Gorman. This marked his 119th strikeout in his first season with the Giants. After passing Perry, he is now only 39 strikeouts behind Don Sutton, the Hall of Fame pitcher ranked seventh on the Dodgers’ all-time list.

Notably, Busch Stadium, home of the Cardinals, remains the only ballpark where Verlander has never earned a win in his career. This was his second regular-season start there, with the previous one dating back to June 16, 2009, when he was with the Detroit Tigers. However, his first World Series appearance also took place at this stadium during his rookie season in 2006, where he took the loss in Game 5, the clinching game for the opponent.

In this game, Verlander pitched six innings, allowing three hits with no runs. He left the game holding a 2-0 lead and was eligible for the win, but the Giants gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth, suffering a walk-off defeat, leaving Verlander's strong performance without a decision.
