After Devers was traded away, Red Sox third baseman Bregman may opt out of his contract and return to free agency.

Alex Bregman, Boston Red Sox's main third baseman, will qualify to opt out of his contract once this season concludes. Media reports now indicate he is likely to explore free agency once more.

Last offseason, the Red Sox secured Bregman with a three-year, $120 million contract. With this American League Gold Glove third baseman joining, the team moved Rafael Devers to designated hitter. Subsequently, Devers became unhappy over defensive position issues, and the Red Sox, who had developed him as their starting third baseman since 2017, eventually traded him to the San Francisco Giants.

Since joining the Red Sox this year, Bregman has played in 95 games, posting a .281 batting average with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs. Although his contract is for three years, he has the option to opt out after this season and again after the 2026 season.

ESPN reporter Jeff Passan recently wrote that unless Bregman suffers an injury or a significant decline in performance before the season ends, he is expected to opt out of his current contract after this season.

Passan noted that besides his excellent hitting and solid defense, Bregman has become a clubhouse leader, building good relationships with rookies like Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell. During spring training, he even gifted each newcomer a suit, demonstrating his role as a big brother figure.

It is worth mentioning that many stars will enter free agency this offseason, including Kyle Tucker, Kyle Schwarber, Framber Valdez, and Bo Bichette, among others.
